Here are some great drills that we have been doing for core strength and handstands on bars. I picked up these bands GAT from Best Athletic Design. We have come up with some great drills and exercises using these.
Behind the scenes at Tumble Trak
Behind the Scenes of Tumbl Trak Products Team
James Parent │ Sales Representative │ Tumbl Trak
Tumbl Trak seems to be known as the innovators of new gymnastics equipment. So here is a look at what we go through on a daily, monthly, yearly basis on taking a product to the market.
The first thing I think we should address is how we get new ideas. Ideas come to us from several sources. One is our Products Development Team, a group at Tumbl Trak, which might have some specific gymnastics problem to address. Sometimes coaches who have ideas, or who have a finished product , contact us. We get some ideas from other industries, and gymnastics specific issues. We are always looking for new ideas from people who can help solve a problem that many coaches are having during the training process. Tom Forster came to us with a device that helped teach kids to shift their wrists and it is now being sold as the Forster Bar (I never said we were great at names).
Ideas are presented at our Products meeting, and discussed to determine potential problems with development. If the product is deemed to have potential we quickly think of what type of materials we will use to make the idea work. We tried the Forster bars out in a number of different materials and sizes to see which would be optimal for training.
The next step to the process is making the first prototype. This is usually a very rough product to assess whether the idea’s primary goal may be achieved. We test this prototype inside our facility, making sure that it will not be a danger to field test the longevity of the materials. If it passes our initial test then we get it out into one of many test facilities that are friends of Tumbl Trak. This is a test to see if the kids can beat up the equipment and let us know about the weaknesses that they have seen and to test the durability of the piece. The feedback during this phase is extremely important to us, which is why we want the test facility to put it through a lot of use.
With the feedback that we have gathered we will work on a next version of the product. This one will include some corrections that need to be made to make it safer, last longer, and will include many additional features to make it work with a lot of our other products or products that gyms will normally have. Once again we will do the initial test inside of our facility and then will get them out to test facilities.
This process will continue until we are satisfied with all of the features that it has as well as the safety of the item. This could take one year (the least amount of time we let a product be tested before going to market) or multiple years. All of it depends on the complexity of the design or the product itself as well as how may ideas we are working on at that time. Sometimes we find out that a particular prototype will not work, or will be too expensive. However, the core idea is good, and eventually it may morph into another idea. Even though the Forster Bar is out in the market we are continuing to test out new materials to help battle the issue of a high retail price. We hope we can find the perfect answer of getting the product to work the way it does right now, but be able to sell it for less.
That is the basics of what we do in order to bring you the equipment that you love. If you have any questions or have ideas please let us know. Our goal is to help the gymnastics industry train easier while getting the job done
NOTE FROM TONY: Last Summer the great people from Tumble Trak sent me some equipment to review for them. Read the Review of the AIR PIT.

Mancino Tower Block Product Review
Recently I did a clinic for the NY State YMCA Gymnastics League up in Cortland, NY. It was a pretty well equipped facility and they had 1 piece of equipment that I immediately fell in love with.
The 4 Piece Tower Block from Mancino.
My favorite thing about these blocks was the simple versatility. This is a 4 piece set consisting of:
2 each 24” high x 30” wide x 72” long.
2 each 48” high x 30” wide x 72” long
When they are attached together (with velcro) they make a great above ground channel bar and make spotting just about anything on high bar a breeze. I am only 5’7” and I had NO problem spotting things up on the high bar. For those who struggle with math (myself included) the height of the mat stack is 6” and VERY stable.
The beauty is when you take these apart and can be used by EVERYBODY.
I was given some advice many years ago when I first opened up my gym. If you spend $100 on TEAM, make sure you spend $100 on your CLASSES. When team needed a new Vault Table, I spent an equal amount of money on new shapes, wedges etc on classes. This does a few things-
1- How bad do I really need it? Knowing that it will cost me as a business 2x as much.
2- Can I use this piece of equipment in different parts of my program?
If I can use a piece of equipment in different parts of my program then I don’t need to double my expenses. If I buy a new vaulting board- This is a piece of equipment that can be used in different parts of my program. If I buy a new Vault Table- this is a piece of equipment that will be used by only a fraction of the kids in the gym. AND I have to spend an equal amount of money on classes.
Individually they make great spotting blocks and P.bar blocks. Your recreational and preschool classes can vault up to them, they can stack next to a beam to make a beam table, they are great in preschool and recreation circuits on floor.
In my clinic- I used these mats everywhere with everybody.
I e-mailed the good people over at Mancino to get the specs on the mats. Here is what I received:
Secure attaching system allows for advanced training progressions. Premium Construction includes Crosslinked Polyethylene Foam for stability and reinforcement.
What’s the difference?…
As with all Mancino Products, we have researched the core polyurethane foam and have found that a 2.2# density, 95 ILD specification will stand up to years of heavy training all over the gym. This polyurethane core is encased in 2″ thick Cross linked Polyethylene Foam (2# per cubic ft) which furthers strengthens the individual units and makes the set super sturdy. Our 18oz vinyl coated nylon cover features a “four edge” velcro system for secure attaching and standard handles for easy transporting all over the gym.
Customers who call through February 20, 2012 with the Promotion code: ILoveGymMomentum will receive a 10% discount from the list price of $2850.00 (plus shipping).
A NEW WAY TO CLEAN CHALK!
Shared by Jay Soucy, Owner of Evergreen Gymnastics. Jay and his wife, Nancy, own and coach at their gym, Evergreen Gymnastics in Lisbon, NH. Both from Methuen and MHS sweethearts, they moved to northern NH in 1998 and purchased the gymnastics school in 2005. Jay began gymnastics after watching Luke Skywalker flip through the swamps of Dagobah with Yoda on his back.
“Do or do not! There is no try.”
Nancy & I installed beautiful, cocoa, hickory hardwood at the house last month. We couldn’t be more pleased. Our puggle, Molly, loves them too. She shares all her unwanted dog hair with the new flooring. The contrast is something to behold. Needless to say, we started shopping for a handy, easy to use broom or mop to clean the floors. A friend told us to try a Shark Steam Mop. You can find them at Walmart, Home Depot etc.
It works as advertised, no cleaning supplies needed. You add water, attach the re-usable cleaning pad, plug it in, and you are off. The steam seeps through the pad as you push it back and forth and the pad pick up the dirt, hair, and CHALK. That’s right. Chalk. We found the perfect cleaning device for those chalky mats around the gym. The steam mop is light and glides along those gymnastics mat surfaces with ease. In no time, we had all our mats done.
You cannot add cleaners or deodorizers into the mop, because of the heating element and risk of damage to the device. Because of this limitation, we like to spray some deodorizer down on the mats to “freshen-up” the gym. It would be nice to be able to add the water and deodorizer into the mop.
We purchased the two-sided version. This cuts down changing out the pads. You may want to buy additional cleaning pads. Two pads come with the mop. We bought an extra two for an additional $19. When the pads get dirty, you wash them in the laundry. We love it!
Give it a try!

Product Review, Tumbl Trak’s Air Pit
This past summer the good people from Tumbl Trak were nice enough to send me some products to demo. They sent to my gym in NH and camp in NY
- Air Pit (think inflatable level 4 vault mat)
- Cast Trainer Bar
- Quick Flex bar in a bag
- Orbiter
- Bungee ramp
- A few of the Forester Bar
- Booster Blocks
- Pit Pillows
I promised to give the equipment a good workout and send them a review of the equipment. The first piece of equipment I reviewed was the Air Pit. I was a little nervous about the durability of the mat. We planned on using the mat both for your traditional Level 4 vaults but also we used it behind the table for Vault Timers for some pretty big kids. In the end we ended up using this all over the place.
- We used it for vault
- We used it out on the floor for double back and full in back out timers.
- We used it over at bars behind the low bar for Over shoots and we stood it up on end to use it to help with clear hips.
- I even threw it over the trampoline and used it for some vault drills.
- The last thing I did was flip it upside down and we took it white water rafting. WARNING- DO NOT DO THIS. WE ARE STUPID.
What I like about the pit-
- It only weighs 70 pounds! Very easy to move
- Easy to fill up with air.
- Lots of velcro on it to attach other mats.
- Stays firm, every once and a while you need to add some air but it stays firm.
- Pretty versatile
- Very Buoyant.
- Good price
What I didn’t like
- Pretty Hard. You really cant use it alone for tumbling or vault. You will need to have another mat on it.
- Surface is a little uneven.
- Doesn’t handle very well in rapids
- Difficult to get back in if you fall out as you go over a waterfall.
Welcome
Today is the official unveiling of Gym Momentum. This project has been a long time coming!

Gym Momentum is almost ready to be unveiled!
Thanks for checking out my newest project, GYM MOMENTUM. I am very excited about what this can become. My goal is for this site to become a place for coaches and even class teachers to get a drill or progression AND share a drill. Every clinic I have ever done I have picked up a new drill or idea. This is a way for you to share your drills with other gymnastics professionals all over the world!
Gymnastics is a dynamic sport, we have to constantly evolve by learning and then sharing that knowledge with the gymnasts. I hope that GYM MOMENTUM can help you stay focused and be creative and help you blast through those road blocks when they come up.
Let’s face it- every once and a while- we all need to vent and blow off steam Because we work with kids- we all have some very funny stories as well. Sometimes we all need to share a laugh. Here is your opportunity.
This site will have new things posted almost daily.
